T5 Project: Lowlands Away UPDATE

Lowlands Away is the pirate themed EP that Sevin Fernando and I are working on. We were given a task to make an EP in 5.1 Dolby Atmos Surround Sound. For more info on the project, please visit (https://katharsismuse.wixsite.com/katharsis/single-post/2018/08/11/Lowlands-Away).

The final deadline for the project is coming up now and we have reached the mastering stages of the tracks. We decided to change the second track from the shanty ‘Roll The Old Chariot’ into ‘Old Maui.’ The shanty gave the EP more character and makes the story more intense. However soon after this decision was made we decided to take out the shanty and keep the Metal flow throughout the album.

We were asked to do unconventional recording which is recording in a space which is not usually advised to record in or is an unusual place to record in. For our project we decided to record a natural reverb for the snare. We set up snare at the bottom floor of a spiral staircase and a microphone 3 floors higher. The microphone was placed near the centre of the dome and was set to omni-directional. The results we got were much better than expected and added a lot of character to our tracks.
