Folk Punk: The Dreadnoughts


The Dreadnoughts are a folk punk band that was formed in Vancouver in 2007. They are a band with a basic punk band set up of drums, guitar, bass, and vocals, along with a violin, an accordion, a mandolin and a banjo. The band started out as a group wanting to perform so they can earn money of drinks. Fast forward to 2018 they have four studio albums and two EPs. They always entertain with their heavy punk riffs that are blended with Irish folk tradition.

The dreadnoughts are known for many of their Polka hits mixed as they are on a mission to bring polka back. They attempted with the album ‘Polka’s Not Dead.’ Majority of their albums consists of Irish sea shanties, along with polka hits with intense fast drums. The band is known to be proud of their live shows. Wherever they go and perform, there is chaos. The chaos they try to promote is important to them as it is known to be the first rule of punk.

The Dreadnoughts grew to fame after performing well-known sea shanties and opened opportunities to different groups of people who are touring just to sing shanties. The band is growing bigger and bigger and inspiring people every day due to their heavy music and melodic riffs.
