Synthesizers

Majority of music made today consists of some sort of electronic element. Especially the use of a synthesizer or also known as synths. Synthesisers are usually used in both composition of music as well as live performances. It is used to create and manipulate sound, usually done using a synthesizer on a computer.

Synthesisers are used in all types of music today, in almost every genre. Even though it is mostly used for Hip-Hop, Rap, EDM, Dubstep etc., it is also used in many sub-genres of metal, blues, pop, and many more.

Metal is a genre that is not so known for using any electronically elements, especially synthesizers. However, synths are used in more now in metalcore, nu-metal, and many other sub-genres of metal. A band that is known for using many synths and synth elements is Bring Me The Horizon.

Bring Me The Horizon

Bring Me The Horizon in their latest album used a lot of different kind of synths. For example the song “Follow You” has many elements such as electronic drums which start the song as well as different noises to accompany the atmosphere of the ballad. Metal and punk music usually have minimal if not nothing of electronic elements. While in the song “Throne” in the latest Bring Me The Horizon album has 15 synth tracks and 4 electronic drum tracks in their Pro Tools Session.

Danny Elfman

Danny Elfman is a musical composer mainly for films. He is known for many projects as he has done the soundtrack for Batman and Robin as well as most of the movies created by Tim Burton. Danny Elfman uses more orchestral instruments that were sampled. So he would record musicians playing one note of a certain instrument and then he would mix and edit the noise and put it into a midi. Therefore he was manipulating the acoustic instruments and writing music as if he was making them play the full song. this can be seen in his work of Nightmare Before Christmas as everything was done through midi and synths except the orchestral instruments were recorded and manipulated.

Modern Rap

Rap consists of many uses of a synth as well as many different samples. Samples in rap could range from someone playing one note of an instrument and that gets manipulated and a beat gets made, or sampling also works in a way where they would take a quote or a noise heard from anywhere, could be another song or a movie and they would use that as a sample throughout the song or just as ad-libs in a track. Other than sampling all the other noises from the drums to the strings in a rap song is all made digitally through a synthesizer.
