How did distortion expand metal!!

Distortion could be used for any instrument and could be applied to anything recorded. It could be applied through physical pedal or through plug-ins in any DAW (Digital Audio Workshop). Distortion is mainly used on guitars to give that more heavier, edgy and aggressive tone. Distortion could be found in any genera but is known to be used in Metal and Punk music a lot.

Distortion is the sound of a guitar having the edges of it’s sound waves compressed (Bouchard,2014). Distortion comes in many different forms and sounds such as fuzz, overdrive also could be distortion straight from the guitar amp. They all have different sounds that suit different types of music and playing style.

Many different types are used a lot especially for punk bands in the 80s and 90s like Rancid, Misfits, Minor Threat etc. The song by famous punk band Rancid “Black Lung” (video shown below) has a lot of distortion on their guitars. There are many layers of guitars including lead guitars and many rhythm guitars and they all consist of distortion. It helps give the song the edge and the atmosphere that punk band aim to get on their tracks.

Deathcore and Djent are two out of many subgenera's of metal. Metal bands started focusing on distortion for vocals in recent years. A very known deathcore band known as Thy Art Is Murder are known for their heavy distortion on their vocals. It is commonly used as most of the vocals are growls and screams. It gives more affect to when the listeners are enjoying the music as it gets accompanied by heavy distorted guitars and loud drums.

Distortion has helped expand the genres as it made new subgenera's and has helped many guitar players find that edge they need when making music.
