THE PUNK MOVEMENT
In my opinion one of the greatest things that happened to music was the punk movement. Punk music started a trend where you can form a band in your garage, produce music and rise to fame without a record company. It was taking over the entire underground scene at the time(Dice,2013). Punk music was all about making the music and performing in your own way. Freedom and creativity was the key to punk music. Artists did not have to follow anyone else’s opinion or structure, they would make their own. Which is something I find amazing as I feel freedom in creativity will give the best result.
Unfortunately punk music was not accepted when it started in 1970. Rock music was already built at the time and no one was ready to accept the change of that was happening. Punk was not accepted due to its wild and aggressive nature. Even though punks was shunned during the 1970s, as it grew more and more it has evolved and become a part of every type of music style and genre. Many of my favourite genres such as Ska wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for punk music.
Another movement that was started from punk was the straight edge movement which is something that I strongly agree with. The term straight edge was made from one of the most influential bands in the punk scene who had an impact on many peoples lives, Minor Threat. It started with their song ‘Straight Edge’. Straight edge showed that you can make good music with a sober mind. At the time of growth for punk, rock and metal music were evolving as well. Rock and metal were known for their heavy style as well as a ‘party attitude’ which consist of alcohol and smoking. Minor Threat and punk music was there to show that music can be made better without the habits of drinking and smoking.
Punk music stands for something that i strongly agree with which is that no one need any help when it come to creativity.
